Oulton Park Race Report - MGOC Championship 2017

2019 MG Owners' Club - Production MG Championship






Rounds 5 and 6:  Snetterton 7th May  

The drivers headed up the A11 into Norfolk on a Bank Holiday Monday for a one day BARC organised meeting. The races were to be held on the 2.96 mile Snetterton 300 circuit, this is the longer of the two main track configurations and follows the format of the old circuit with the addition of a twisty and technical infield section.

Given that the races were to be held on a Bank Holiday Monday it was perhaps surprising that the forecast was for a dry and very hot day.


The weather forecast was correct and qualifying took place under a scorching sun and a temperature of 80°F.  Pole position was taken by the MGF of Simon Kendrick who had Steve Darbey alongside him on the front row ahead of Dave Mellor, who only managed three laps due to a mechanical problem, and the lurid pink MGF of Martin Wills. Row 3 saw the MGF of Stuart Plotnek and the ZR160 of Dean Sullivan who was having his first race since 2011.

The leading Classic Class car was the 1275 Midget of Will Sharpe who was making a welcome return to the championship.  Jim Baynam was just .011secs behind with Dave Amphlett, Marcus Holland and James Pryor a little further back. The ZR160 of Sarah Sullivan was the sole entry in Class B

Round 5

The field got away cleanly and the MGF of Kendrick got the power down well to lead the race ahead of Mellor with Wills Darbey and Plotnek in a nose to trail.  Kendrick held the lead for the opening lap but Mellor slipped by under braking at the Hairpin and moved clear of the chasing pack.  Kendrick became embroiled in a tremendous battle with Wills and Darby but it all went wrong for the reigning champion and he retired on lap 6 leaving Wills with a healthy lead in Class F.

By mid-race, Mellor had a commanding lead from Wills but the blue ZR of Darbey was never more than a length behind and closing on Kendrick in 3rd place. Just behind the leading group, Plotnek was having a mighty battle for 4th place with Dean Sullivan, these two swapping places several times before Sullivan dropped back on the final lap with a misfire.

Mellor reeled off the remaining laps in confident style and took the chequered flag by 8.4 secs from the leading MGF of Wills who just managed to hold off Darbey who got past Kendrick on the penultimate lap after a close but cleanly fought battle. Plotnek took 4th place ahead of Sullivan, Baker, McDermid and Nick Golhar.

In Class A, Baynam, Amphlett and the TF of Walker got away ahead the Midget of Sharpe but by the end of the opening lap Sharpe had moved clear up to 2nd place but by this time Baynam had established a 100 metre lead looked to be in control. A little further back, Pryor, Holland and Amphlett were having a close battle for 3rd place with van Vuuren, Millard and Fisher in close company.  Despite his best efforts, Sharpe was unable to close the gap to Baynam and dropped down the order on lap 7 with a misfire leaving Baynam to take the Classic Class win from Sharpe with Pryor just managing to hold off Amphlett to take 3rd place

Round 6

By the time the cars assembled for the late afternoon race the temperature had thankfully dropped a few degrees making things a bit easier for the drivers and the cars.

When the red lights went out, Kendrick made another perfect start to take the lead into Riches with Wills moving up from row 2 to slot in behind the leader with Mellor in 3rd place ahead of Plotnek and Darbey.

Wills closed in on Kendrick along the Revett Straight and took the lead exiting the Esses before Mellor further demoted Kendrick at the Bombhole.  Mellor then began to close in on the leader and took the lead at Agostini corner on lap 5 and began to pull away from the chasing pack. Wills, Kendrick, Darbey and Plotnek were in a four car train covered by less than one second in what was a hugely entertaining battle for 2nd place.

Mellor duly took the chequered flag by 4.42 secs from Wills with Darbey taking 3rd place by a narrow margin from Kendrick with Dean Sullivan a few lengths behind in 5th place.
In the Classic Class, Baynam made another good start but on this occasion Sharpe also got away well and slotted into 2nd place ahead of Amphlett with the chasing of Millard, Pryor, van Vuuren and Fisher being held up by a slower MGF and dropping back down the field.  Baynam led the first two laps but was coming under increasing pressure from a hard charging Sharpe who looked likely to take the lead but the Midget slowed on lap 3 with a fuel pump problem leaving Baynam with a commanding lead over Amphlett who was well clear of Millar, Fisher and Pryor.

Baynam went on to take his second win of the weekend ahead of Amphlett with Millard taking 3rd place by a length from Pryor with Fisher in 5th place.

Sarah Sullivan took her second Class B win of the day in her Road specification ZR160.

New lap records were set by Jim Baynam in Classic Class, Sarah Sullivan in Class B and Stuart Plotnek in Class F.

Will Sharpe  – Pole position and a very competitive return to the championship in his 1275 Midget
